Review from "CONCRETE WEB". Rated 99/100

"This is the one-man project of one Markus H. Madigan. In a former life, he was part of Andalucia, a band that never broke through because of the Grunge break-out in the early Nineties. Disillusioned by that, he'd also been walking around with some ideas for a solo project. A project that becomes reality when he records his first demo "Varsel" in 1998 (which is still intented to be released as the as yet unreleased self-titled debut). Early 1999 the first official album "Blackarts" is recorded. It is released in 2000 with bonus tracks on Northlore, but even before that Markus had started recordings for the follow-up "Witches – Salem (1692 Vs 2001)" (which gets released on Northlore in 2001). Late 2002 recordings for thís album began. They were finished & mixed in january 2003. Then, Black Lodge licences "Witches..." and as a result of that Markus is enabled to completely rebuild his studio. In April of the same year, pre-production for the next album begins (a pre-production which would take him the whole year of 2004). This summer already saw the re-release (in re-mixed, re-mastered, & re-packaged version) of "Blackarts", and January 21st of 2005 will finally see the release of thís album!

"Now, what kind of music is on offer here?", I here you ask! Well, in essence, it's a multi-layered but highly melodic Metal, which gets an atmospherical Black touch thanks to the keyboards (also some piano) on the one side, and Markus' mostly 'squeeling pig' vocals on the other side (I mean, can't really call 'em Black screams, since the intensity puts them in a category of their own)! The Metal itself is rather Thrashy than Black or Death, with a couple of very Progressive passages, and the combination as a whole is really quite original! There are a couple of tracks without vocals (some lyrics are in Markus's native tongue) that differ a lot in intensity as well. While album opening "Chrono Cross" sees electric guitar being used and has a more aggressive character, "At Zanarkand" (only piano) & "Jacob's Ladder" (piano & keys) are sedate and calm. Album closing "Prisoners Of Fate" even has Neo-Classical influences and ends the album in beauty. To complete his own diversity, "The Vision" and "What About Me" sees Markus doing 'normal' & clean vocals, as well as somewhat darker ones (including those Black screams of his)! Maybe they're actually part of a 3-song package (including the preceding "The Leader") as the music of those songs flows from one track into the other, with "What About Me" ending in a very weird way, as you get some more music after a couple of seconds of silence. Worthy of a nomination for that 'Best Albums Of 2005' list of mine! I sure hope its follow-up can expect a 2005 release as well!"

Review from "ROOMTHIRTEEN". Rated 10/13

"It's difficult to categorise a band who only do covers, other than in the ever expanding category of "Rubbish". So when Elvira Madigan came along and proved that cover songs do have the power to take what was already there and mutate it successfully into something fresh and exciting, yet still being able to pay homage to the creator of the song, one can not help feeling a little excited.

Marcus Madigan, the mastermind and soul creator of Wiccan Aftermath, has provided for the listener 11 tracks of pure gold. There are no new tracks on this album, and yet I feel that if there had been, the result would not have been as accessible as it is.

It does help to have heard the tracks originally before having a go at Elvira, but saying that there is no track on here that is too inaccessible. Everything on here is unique and serves a purpose, rather than simply sitting on an album as a filler as so many bands seem to be happy to do these days.

By far the best song on the album is "At Zanarkand", originally written by Nobou Uematsu for the game Final Fantasy X. This is a haunting yet powerful track which Marcus has changed to make more listenable out of the context of the game, yet the emotion that was there hasn't been left behind. Expertly played by Marcus, this alone is a reason to buy the album.

But wait, along comes Chrono Cross and Prisoners Of Fate, both originally by Yasunori Mitsuda for the game Chrono Trigger. These three pieces of music all make Wiccan Aftermath by far the best thing I've heard in an awfully long time.

If you like your music simplistic guitar chords, chugging base lines and speedy drumming, you need to turn away instantly. However, if you've ever been moved by a film soundtrack, if you play the piano or if you have any music sense at all, Elvira Madigan are a must-buy."

Review from "UROTSUKIDOJI'S PAD". Rated 8/10

"OK, now this is something different. The band in question, "Elvira Madigan", is in fact a one-man project, and that man is Sweden's Marcus H. Madigan. He does it all; vocals, guitars, synths, and bass. The "band" has two previous full-lengths under its belt, but this time out did something a little different, an album of all cover songs! Well, I guess the initial premises is not all that different, many bands have done this (Metallica, Six Feet Under, Napalm Death, Love Like Blood, etc.) however, no one has picked such obscure songs as mister Madigan and changed them in such a profound way. Here we have songs from video games ("Chrono Cross" and "Final Fantasy X"), Tori Amos, the Scorpions, Jean Michel Jarre (European Electronica artist), Nordman (Swedish Pop/Folk band), and no less than four tracks originally penned by Chris DeBurgh! Someone's obviously a big fan, I'm just thankful that none of them turned out to be the puke-fest "The Lady in Red". Now, think about that eclectic group of artists and imagine their works transformed into Gothic, symphonic Black-Metal masterpieces in the same vein as Cradle Of Filth! Even the vocals employed by Marcus are reminiscent of gremlin-esque screechings of Mr. Dani Filth! Basically, if you like later era COF, I don't see how you could not appreciate this disc. Things go from mellow and moody to heavy as hell in the blink of an eye, and boredom never even has a chance to find a foothold. It's both inventive and oddly original, well, as original as an album's worth of other people's songs can be I guess. For more info, you can find the man on line at elviramadigan.com."

"Marcus H. Madigan – the one-man-band mastermind behind the great ELVIRA MADIGAN returned with another interesting and avant-garde release, an album with 11 cover versions, but the more curious aspect of this release is that he don’t need obvious covers, they include metal versions of playstation RPG game “Chrono Cross” and Final Fantasy game music “At Zanarkand”, Tori Amos “Lieee” cover version with melodic black atmospheres and a very dark cover to SCORPIONS’ “Alien Nation”, another great versions to C. deBurgh songs are included in this precious piece of metal music. Congratulations for the band for this powerful and innovative release!"

"What a surprise to have this album of covers done by this amazing one man band. It is amazing to see how Marcus Madigan transforms all this tracks into Elvira Madigan´s own music. I liked specially the tracks that had a softer original version, like the Chris De Burgh ones, because Elvira Madigan turns them into a more powerful track with a blackish feelings in them. The Scorpion´s "Alien Nation" takes a more extreme feeling but keeping the original spirit of the compositions having that melody that is so memorable in the chorus. There is a Tori Amos track too, done very climatically by Marcus Madigan. the album is a good complement to the other releases by this incredible band. The best for me is the transformation of pop to climatic powerful music done here by Madigan´s brain. Lovers of cover albums should not miss tis one, is essential."

Review from "METALEATER WEBZINE". Rated 8/10

"When I first picked up the new ELVIRA MADIGAN CD and looked at the back cover, I thought "oh no...an album of all cover tunes?" I've never been a fan of cover tunes because to me, it seems like the easy way out. You know what I mean? If a song is already proven, then you're half way there. So, to me, an album that contains all cover tunes is not that enticing. However, when I first listened to "Angels Deamonae - Wiccan Aftermath" (which by the way is subtitled "Bloodstained Covers For Sirens And Sinners"), I was pleasantly surprised. Then, as I played the album for a second time, I was interested in learning more about ELVIRA MADIGAN - and I was impressed!
I have to say that that Marcus H. Madigan (the sole creator/performer behind the 'band'), has a completely refreshing attitude. After a period of self-realizaiton, Madigan decided to forego everything he thought about creating music and decided to play completely for himself. His rules, his ideas, his songs, all done his way. That stance gave Marcus the freedom to create, without the preconceived ideas behind most songs.
Madigan created his self titled debut, and the people started to listen. And then the accolades came. Marcus H. Madigan was on to something, and ELVIRA MADIGAN was born. Who would have thought? You throw out the rules, do your own thing regardless of the current trends, have no expectations, and then the success starts to come. Then, with the next two releases, "Blackarts" and "Witches - Salem (1692 vs. 2001)", the machine was in high gear. But when an artist is going full speed for any length of time, the inevitable will happen - creative burnout. That's what happened to Madigan, and he decided it was time to pause, recharge the batteries, and put out something completely fun. It was during this time that "Angelis Deamonae - Wiccan Aftermath" came to be.

The album is Madigan's take on some songs that he just really likes. Metal, pop, adult contemporary, it didn't matter because a good song is a good song. Having a black/death/goth metal band cover a TORI AMOS song might seem like a stretch to most people, and it is. But the version of "Iieee" is really out there but plain and simple, this tune works. I would be really curious to hear what TORI thinks of it.
In the metal department, ELVIRA MADIGAN'S cover of "Alien Nation" is a wonderful, black metal version of the SCORPIONS' hit. My first thought was that I liked this version better than the original. But then after the initial excitement of hearing something so different wore off, I realized that while this new version of the tune is really cool, the original, as is the case with most cover songs, is better. But this still kicks some major ass! The highlight of "Angelis Demonae - Wiccan Aftermath", however, is without a doubt "Spanish Train". This CHRIS DEBURGH song is tailor made for the black/goth genre. Everything in this song is perfect and a great choice for the disc. Sorry Chris, but this song now belongs to ELVIRA MADIGAN! There are a couple more CHRIS DEBURGH tunes found here, but I would call them a trilogy as opposed to three songs - "The Leader", "The Vision", and "What About Me?" blend together very nicely. To be honest with you, I'm not sure if the songs were meant to be a trilogy or not (I'm not a CHRIS DEBURGH fan), but the result is very impressive I must say.

The only downside of the disc is the fact that there are four instrumentals. Though they are well performed, they just didn't do much for me. I really preferred the songs with vocals so I skipped to "Spanish Train" again.

Marcus H. Madigan is a stellar musician, and a man of complete integrity, something that is a rarity in the music biz. He has carefully picked great songs, the production and mix are amazing, and the artwork for the cover is killer. This, for me, is a great surprise. For "Angelis Deamonae - Wiccan Afermath" to garner an 8 from a guy who doesn't like cover tunes, well...you know that this is something really good. Check out ELVIRA MADIGAN if you like music that is uncompromising, and played/produced incredibly well. I can't wait to pick up Marcus' first two albums of original material! Nicely done Marcus! I'm off to the CD store! You should do the same."

Review from "ROCKEYEZ WEBZINE". Rated 8/10

"Elvira Madigan a unique band of underground Gothic music. Has all the making of a fantastic sound track. I really got into this CD because I love the music. The vocals require an acquired taste, which many will not like. The vocals are raspy demon like which fits the music. Haunting keyboards echo through every song. The power here is in the music itself. At times, the music is melodic and symphonic to harsh overtones, which is unbearable. Track 5 and 6 are masterpieces and both "At Zanarkand" and "Jacob's Ladder" are instrumentals . Track 7 “Elvira” shows that the vocalist can change his styles. Amazingly, without the raspy vocals, he can really sing. My favorite tracks are "The Leader," "The Vision." and "What About Me?" all three songs run into each other starting as a ballad working it's way to mind blowing musicians dream. The mix between the Guitar and Keyboards is heavenly. 'It's just Fantastic'"

Review from "UNDERGROUNDPRESS". Rated 5/5

"This is an interesting concept – one man writing, recording and producing a metal album of covers for music from Tori Amos, Chris de Burg and Jean Michel Jarre. The vocal are done in Black metal style, blood drenched and brutal, the music is melodic, fuelled by a guitar-driven dark atmosphere and haunted by dramatic keyboards.
'...Wiccan Aftermath' is a dark symphonic tribute to the art of music – regardless of genre."

Review from "RAW NERVE PROMOTIONS WEBZINE". No Rating

"Stunning artwork here (yes I am an absolute sucker for pictures of scantily clad beautiful women in leathers (artily done of course)) on this CD from one man project Elvira Madigan, brought to us by Swedish label Black Lodge. It is an album full of covers, including reworkings of Tori Amos, Jean-Michel Jarre and Chris de Burgh.
The short but melodic dark metal opener 'Chrono Cross' sets the orchestrated scene, and 'Iieee' originally by Miss Amos is performed in a gothic black metal style, akin to Cradle of Filth of more recent times. Next up is 'Alien Nation', penned and played by Mr Schenker and his band of Scorpions, and this works in its heavy doom metal version.
A strange mix of depth filled guitars, whispered haunting vocals, and string based synths seems the order of the day.
It is interesting to hear how the Chris de Burgh songs are handled. 'Spanish Train' has an evil theatrical edge that could fit the Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack and 'The Vision' has a very power metal feel to it.
Rather an odd collection here but certainly good to hear covers that have their own unique touch rather than straight copies."

Review from "BLEEDING FOR METAL WEBZINE". No Rating

"When I got on my hands this CD I sensed that it was going to be a bit interesting. Not for any other reason than that it is full of cover versions. Apparently the keyboardist Marcus H. Madigan releases a new album under the name of ELVIRA MADIGAN, as a break between the usual releases with new tracks from the band. On the biography he talks about battery recharging and instead of doing nothing he did what he always wanted to do, an album with cover versions interpreted the way he wants. Pretty cool, but this justifies everything done on "Angelis Daemonae-Wiccan Aftermath"?
Marcus Madigan seems to like many things out of the heavy metal scene since most of the songs covered here are not from metal acts. TORI AMOS, CHRIS DE BURG, JEAN MICHEL JARRE as well as some strange unknown artists that I don't have a clue about them. Either way, an album full of cover versions cannot hold any criticism or assessment. All I can say for this one is that the songs that Mr. Marcus Madigan chooses to cover are very good, especially the CHRIS DE BURG ones. Other than that the cover versions almost always move on melodic heavy metal territories with black metal vocals, with a lot of keyboards and atmosphere of course.
Some of the best moments of the album would be 'Lieee' from TORI AMOS, the classic 'Spanish Train' and 'The Vision' from CHRIS DE BURG as well as the two songs from the "Chrono Cross" soundtrack of the self titled RPG game composed by Y. MITSUDA, 'Chrono Cross' and the closing 'Prisoners Of Fate'.
Summing up, it was a nice listening experience, although I sense that the production could have been much better. To say the least "Angelis Daemonae-Wiccan Aftermath" drew my attention on listening to more things from ELVIRA MADIGAN, since they sound pretty cool. The dedicated fans of the band should invest. As for the rest, well they can surely have quite interesting listening sessions to say the least. The 35 minutes of music as well as the nature of the release cannot be assessed in my opinion."

Review from "TOMBSTONE.GR WEBZINE". Rated 8/10

"This is one of the most talented black metal bands around. I have said it in the past and I have no problem to say it again, now that I have heard their new album. The album has no band composed songs, instead it’s a collection of covers, played the Madigan way. There’s some Tory Amos, some Scorpions, a lot of Chris De Burgh and some music from video games, all barely recognizable after the treatment they received from the band. I like what they have done to the songs. They have taken some very different songs and turned them into metal tunes in a way that makes you think that these songs were written for metal bands. Especially “Spanish Train” is amazing, although all the songs are good. This time the man experimented with some clean vocals and to be honest this is something I would like to hear more and with original Elvira Madigan songs. I think it suits their music very well and with the proper use, they could enhance their music. If you are into black metal this is a band you have to check out."

Second review from "METALSTORM.EE WEBZINE". Rated 8,5/10

"One of the most underestimated and infamous Black Metallists has to be Swedish's Marcus Hammarström, also known as Marcus H. Madigan, and his project Elvira Madigan. In Elvira he does it all, from Vocals, guitars, bass to programming drums, and it's for sure no bad band. Even me that's not into Black in anyway finds this good, and that's not only because I'm a Swede too or because Marcus sometimes sings in Swedish, it's because I, simply, finds this good.
With 2001:s "Witches – Salem" Elvira Madigan stroke quite big around the globe, more and more people found out about Marcus and I think that album sold pretty well. Now it's time for the next album, but (with a big "B") this is NOT a successor to "Witches" (the real successor is recorded at this moment), this is a cover album with covers of everything from Pop songs to Videogames.
Among the most famous songs covered here you'll find "Lieee" with Tori Amos, "Alien Nation" with Scorpions and three songs from Japanese RPG games (Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy X). But the funniest thing for us Swedes have to be the cover of the very famous Folk/pop band Nordman ("Under Norrskenet"), they sold gold here in Sweden in the middle of the nineties. But here you'll also find the very reason this album was made, four cover songs of Chris DeBurgh, plus another instrumental cover of the title track of Jacob's Ladder.
This music is quite hard to describe, you'll get the usual Black Metal, with blast beats (made by a drum machine, but it doesn't sounds like a drum machine) and very harsh vocals, but also much clean vocals and acoustic guitars and stuff, so this isn't the regular, primitive Black. And maybe that's why a Melodic Metal fan like me can find joy in it.
And as usual when it comes to Elvira, we'll get a cover with a light-dressed girl from Luis Royo, this is the third time in a row, but I'm not complaining, I find Luis as one of the best artists out there today, and it's a shame that not more Metal bands uses some of his work, because it's fabulous.
What I recommend you to do is to try this band; you'll find out that Marcus is worth more attention than he gets. And if you like it, go and buy this nice cover album, and pick up his "Witches – Salem" at the same time, that album is as good as this.

Check Out: The tear-evoking Final Fantasy X song "At Zanarkand", I've loved that song ever since I played the game. But also try "Alien Nation" and "Under Norrskenet"."

First review from "METALSTORM.EE WEBZINE". Rated 8/10

"Whoever that came with the idea of making cover of non Metal songs in Metal, please receive a great warm hug from me. I always loved those non Metal songs covered by bands everywhere, it gives you the chance to like the songs you hate so much in the eighties or whenever they were composed, either way, is always nice to have this kind of tributes.
Elvira Madigan, as many of you might know, is a one man band, Marcus Hammarstrom is the name of the guy that handles all the duties in the band, and this is his third album, entitled Angelis Deamonae – Wiccan Aftermath – Bloodstained Covers For Sirens And Sirens, and as you might suppose, is a covers album with songs from various artists, videogames, and movies.
As he did with previous albums, the cover art is just lustful and provocative, Luis Royo handles again the art duties in this album, and I’m say I’m very pleased again, I didn’t think he could top the “Witches” (previous album) cover art, but he did it.
The album begins with “Chrono Cross” from the video game of the same name, this is a really good surprise, since I’m a big fan of video games music, specially the ones of any role-playing game such as Chrono Cross, sadly the song is really short and is quickly followed by “Lieee”, originally written and performed by Tori Amos, and I know many Metalheads dig her music, but I never really listened her music that much, so I don’t know the original song, but I can say that this is really good, some symphonic elements and Black Metal overtones make this a nice listen.
Then, Scorpions cover with “Alien Nation” fairly boring song, so I will pass this by since I didn’t found it interesting to be honest with you, next is “Under Norrskenet” from the Sweden band Nordman, band which I’m totally unfamiliar with, the song feels like a Viking Metal song, so is quite good! Next, more from Squaresoft and Nobuo Uematsu , with Final Fantasy series, this time we get a song from Final Fantasy X, sadly I don’t know this song because FFX is the only FF that I haven’t played yet, damn, I need a PS2 urgently!
Then Jacob’s Ladder from the movie of the same name and not one, not two, but four songs of Chris DeBurgh, you might remember him from that infamous song, “The Lady In Red” nevertheless, the covers are quite entertainment, especially “The Leader” and “The Vision”. To be honest the four songs of Deburgh feels more like on big song rather than four separate ones. To close the album another song from Yasunori Mitsuda and Chrono Cross.
As you can see, you have plenty to choose from, videogames, pop music, movies, this album sure is varied and experimental, another excellent releases from Elvira Madigan , and is recommended to anyone that wants to hear any of those songs Elvira Madigan style."

Review from "PITFATHER WEBZINE". Rated 4/5

"Here in the Netherlands we have Arjen “Ayreon” Lucassen running project Ayreon in which he does a lot of the instruments himself. But not like this mister from Sweden. Nice to meet you: Marcus H Madigan: Vocals, Guitar, Drums, Keyboard, Samplings. He does it all. After his band in 1995 split up, the man decided to do it all by himself.

Madigan’s music is hard to nail. Like the bio on his label-website says: “Avant-Garde,Black Metal, Speed Metal, Folk Metal, Progressive Metal, Art Metal. Yes the associations to genres are numerous, and quite natural since practically all those genres show up in songs very hard to define.”
So what to expect from this album then? I would say mostly blackmetal. The first 4 songs on the (short, 35-minute) album certainly are. In fact they really remind me of Cradle of Filth. The vocals are surprisingly alike, the high screams, the deep grunts and low voices, this man can dp ot all. Like Dani Filth. Alien Nation has besides Black Metal a folklore medieval feel over it. The first four songs have a beautiful fairytale-like sound.
And then Madigan really starts to be surprising. At Zanarkand and Jacob’s Ladder are 2 piano songs! Both real fragile and 1min30 long. After the silence the album goes in a direction not really my style but well played and good vocals. Progressive is what it sounds now.

It seems to me this man Madigan has a party of his own, running his own show, doing what he wants. And most important: doing it good. Only thing of comment I have is the sound. Madigan has used his own studio but I think the recording sounds like recorded inside a shoebox. It would be better if he left this task for another studio or something"

Review from "HEAVYMETAL.DK WEBZINE". Rated 60/100

Meget betagende. Meget nyskabende, men til tider osse meget for meget."

Review from "ETERNAL-TERROR WEBZINE". Rated 5/6
